Gates at the Battle of Saratoga, was confined on the infamous prison ship Jersey, held several political offices. Hilliard Gray & Co., Booksellers. In full: "You have not yet informed me what quantity of Mr. Tudor's book was destroyed by the fire. Also, I would like to inform W. Tudor whether his book at Philad. & N. York finds customers." He refers to his brother, author William Tudor. Some wear and chipping to the sheet, not affecting the text. Tyler, Royall (1757‑1826). American jurist and author. Served on the staff of Gen. Benjamin Lincoln during Shay's Rebellion (1786); was chief justice of the Vermont Supreme Court (1807‑1813), and professor of jurisprudence at the U. of Vermont (1811‑1814). Wrote a novel and also the first professionally produced comedy by a native‑born author (The Contrast, 1787). DS, Woodstock, August 24, 1805. A legal agreement, signed as a judge of the Vermont Supreme Court, along with two other judges. A few brown spots, but a remarkably nice document. Very good. $225.00

Brewster of the Portsmouth Lyceum, concerning the possibility of an upcoming lecture. Mentions a lecture on Roger Williams, lengths of time, and other matters. Jurist; friend and protege of Aaron Burr, took Burr's challenge to Hamilton, and served as a second in the famous duel. ALS, 1 p., NewYork, Sept. 17, 1825. To James Vanderpoel, attorney, mainly concerning a land matter: "I am anxious to prevent an irrecoverable separation of the two farms - I have a strong conviction, that if they can be had on favorable terms, and if under all circumstances, my friends should advise it, I shall be able to make an arrangement to get them..." Ends with an interesting postscript: "Be kind enough to tear off what I have written on this page and send it to candle" A couple short tears, but clean readable, and near fine. $200.00
AG-112. Vest, George Graham (1830-1904). Lawyer, member of the Confederate Congress, U.S. Senator. Thought to be the author of the "Ordinance of Secession" in 1861, and as a Confederate congressman appears to be the only one to be publicly whipped (by a woman as an impromptu punishment); as a U.S. Senator, he was known for a disinclination to recognize new developments and issues in American life, and after the Spanish-American War, for considering it unconstitutional for the United States to permanently hold and govern Spanish territories. Signature on a slip of paper. Near fine. $50.00 AG-113. AG-114. Wagner, Henry R. (1862-?) Bibliographer, collector of western Americana, and author. TLS, 1 p., Feb. 26, 1942. Reply to a request for a photograph" "...I beg to advise you that I have not had one taken in forty years, except snapshots, which would hardy be appropriate in your gallery." ALS, New York, May 8, 1883. To: "the Governor of the State of New York" with a recommendation concerning a bill before the legislature. Split along a couple folds, but still in one piece. Concerning land speculation, particularly in the Remsen Tract, "...I was commissioned by a man in N. York to buy the amt. of $10,000 land in the county wherever I could get a bargain for cash..." Discusses several locations, but the client told him to hold off while looking at land in Pennsylvania. Very good. $135.00 AG-128. Yates, Peter W.
