Dix, John Ross (1811-ca.1865). British writer, poet, and surgeon; known for a biography of Thomas Chatterton (1845) among other works; an alcoholic, he traveled between England and America much of his life, but spent his last years here. His whereabouts are unknown after he published some pro-Union poetry in 1864, and he remains an elusive literary figure. ANS, 1 p.,Boston, Sept. 9, 1854.
